Zhang Zhou Pien Tze Huang is recognized as its curative functions and revitalizing effects.

片仔癀以一片即可退癀（消炎化痛）而得名。它原是明朝太医的秘方，后太医出家，到芗城附近的璞山寺当和尚，这秘方也因得以传到芗城，成为该寺的传家之宝。后来主持和尚还俗，在漳州开设馨苑茶庄，兼生产“僧帽牌”片仔癀。1956年纳入漳州制药厂，商标也改为“荔枝牌”。

片仔癀是用麝香、牛黄、蛇胆、田七等名贵中药精制而成的。对急性、慢性肝炎，刀、枪、骨折和烧、烫等多种创伤，脓肿、无名肿毒及一切炎症引起的疼痛、发热等，有显著疗效。外科手术后服用，能消炎止痛，防止伤口感染，加快愈合。
