Miraculous Pill of Ledebouriella (防风通圣丸)

Pills prepared from a classical prescription in TCM, widely used for the treatment of affections due to wind and heat marked by headache, sore throat, fullness in the chest, constipation, skin eruption or ulcers in Chinese clinic.

Principal ingredients: Ledebouriella root, Schizonepeta spike, Peppermint, Ephedra, Rhubarb, Mirabilite, Capejasmine fruit, Platycodon root, Gypsum, Chuanxiong rhizome, Chinese angelica root, White peony root, Scutellaria root, Forsythia fruit, Liquorice, Bighead atractylodes rhizome.

Functions and indications: Relieving exterior syndrome, removing obstruction due to interior syndrome, and clearing away heat and toxic materials. Use for wind-heat in the exterior and dampness-heat in the interior, marked by excess of both interior and exterior, manifested as chillness, high fever, headache, dry throat, constipation, dark urine, or the primary symptoms of boils, eczema and itching.*

Directions: To be taken orally, 1 bag (6 g pills) each time, two times a day.

Caution: It should be used cautiously for patient in pregnancy.

Clinical application: 1. Applicable to cases of early stage of superficial pyogenic infection with local signs of inflammation, chilliness, fever, bitter mouth, constipation, oliguria, red tongue with white fur, floating and rapid pulse. 2. Also indicated for cases of urticaria and eczema with thin and white fur on the tongue, floating and rapid pulse, which are attributive to simultaneous existence of sthenia-syndrome in the superficies and the interior. 3. Also applicable to cases of influenza, poliomyelitis, infectious mononucleosis, mumps, acute cellulitis, ersipelas, acute lymphangitis, etc., which are attributive to simultaneous existence of sthenia-syndrome in the superficies and the interior after attack of exogenous wind-heat and retention of heat in the body.

防风通圣丸

《宣明方论》防风通圣丸：由防风、荆芥、连翘、麻黄、薄荷、川芎、当归、白芍、白术、山栀、大黄酒蒸、芒硝各五钱，石膏、黄芩、桔梗各一两，甘草二两，滑石三两为粗末，组成。系表里、气血、三焦通治之剂，故名曰通圣。
防风通圣丸(散)具有解表通里，清热解毒的作用，是中医用于治疗外寒里热型感冒、头痛咽干、疮疡初起等病的传统药物。近年临床开发出许多新的用途。

外科
荨麻疹：俗称“风疹”“风团”是皮肤黏膜的过敏性疾病以皮肤或黏膜的局限性、暂时性、瘙痒性的潮红斑和风团为特征。防风通圣丸能解表通里，清热解毒，用于荨麻疹。口服，每次6克，一日2次。
皮肤瘙痒症：一种自觉皮肤瘙痒而无原发性损害的皮肤病，临床上可分为全身性皮肤瘙痒和局限性皮肤瘙痒症，后者多局限在肛门和外阴部。如剧烈瘙痒，可见于全身或局限于肛门、阴囊或女阴部，为阵发性、痒感剧烈，常在夜间加重，影响睡眠。诊断如属血虚风燥型的，宜养血润肤。可选润肤丸、二至丸、龟苓膏等；属风湿蕴阻型的，宜疏风胜湿。可选用秦艽丸、除湿丸、防风通圣丸等；属湿热下注型的，宜清利湿热。可选用龙胆泻肝丸等。
带状疱疹，单纯性疱疹，脓疱疮，脂溢性皮炎，药疹：肝经风火湿毒蕴结，皮肤瘙痒或糜烂，溃疡，或小水泡，疼痛，灼
热，或发于面部躯干，或发于口角，二阴，口苦，心烦易怒。治宜清肝泻火，利湿解毒，疏风止痒，可选龙胆泻肝丸，皮肤病血毒丸或防风通圣丸。

内科
脑动脉硬化：口服防风通圣丸每日2次，每次6g。
肥胖症：腹部皮下脂肪充盈，即以脐部为中心的膨满型（腹型）肥胖。口服防风通圣丸每次6g，每日3次，连服3个月。
顽固性哮喘：口服防风通圣丸每日3次，每次6g。
脑病后遗症：对流脑、乙脑、结脑及脑血栓等遗留前额或某一部位疼痛
