Part Used & Method for Pharmaceutical Preparations: The fungus and the carcass of the larvae of various insects are collected in the period of the Summer Solstice (tenth solar term). They are cleaned and dried in the sun or baked.
Properties & Taste: Sweet and warm

Indications & Combinations:

Deficient kidneys manifested as impotence, seminal emissions and soreness and pain in the lower back and knees. Cordyceps (Dongchongxiacao) is used with Dogwood fruit (Shanzhuyu), Dioscorea (Shanyao) and Dadder seed (Tusizi). The herb can also be used alone.
Chronic cough and asthma or cough with bloody sputum due to lung deficiency. Cordyceps (Dongchongxiacao) is used with Glehnia root (Shashen), Donkey hide gelatin (Ejiao) and Tendrilled fritillary bulb (Chuanbeimu).
Spontaneous sweating and aversion to cold due to weakness of the body or illness. Cordyceps (Dongchongxiacao) is cooked with chicken, duck or pork.

　冬虫夏草就是我国传统的名贵药膳滋补品。冬虫夏草不仅可以化痰，还有滋补气血的药效。据古籍医书记载，虫草以全草入药，性平、味甘，适用于肺肾两虚、精气不足、咳嗽气短、自汗盗汗、阳痿遗精等病症。由于它性平力缓，能平补阴阳，所以也是年老体弱、病后体衰、产后体虚者的调补药食佳品。它保肺益补精髓，秘精益气，止血化痰，中医多用于慢性肾炎、肺结核、慢性肝炎、前列腺炎、神经衰弱、腰膝酸痛、心律失常、肿瘤的辅助治疗和老人及产妇贫血虚弱、病后久虚。

一、调节免疫系统功能

免疫系统相当于人体中的军队，对内抵御肿瘤，清除老化、坏死的细胞组织，对外抗击病毒、细菌等微生物感染。人体每天都可能出现突变的肿瘤细胞。免疫系统功能正常的人体可以逃脱肿瘤的厄运，免疫系统功能出现问题的人，却可能发展成肿瘤。冬虫夏草对免疫系统的作用像是在调整音量，使其处于最佳状态。它既能增加免疫系统细胞、组织数量，促进抗体产生，增加吞噬、杀伤细胞数量、增强其功能，又可以调低某些免疫细胞的功能。

二、直接抗肿瘤作用

冬虫夏草提取物在体外具有明确的抑制、杀伤肿瘤细胞的作用。冬虫夏草中含有虫草素，是其发挥抗肿瘤作用的主要成分。
现代药理研究表明，冬虫夏草能激活巨噬细胞内酸性磷酸酶的活性，促进脾脏和肝脏内细胞的吞噬功能。能明显地提高肌体网状内皮系统吞噬能力，又能促进体内T淋巴细胞的转化，促进抗体的形成，提高机体的体液免疫功能，是一副扶正抗癌的滋补良药。不但可以补虚损、益精气、抗病原微生物菌，还可以治疗各种癌症、肿瘤。十分适宜需要补虚益气或患有肺癌、肾癌、肝癌、乳腺癌、食道癌、喉癌、子宫癌、前列腺癌等各种癌症的患者食用。
　根据2001年5月1日出版的《现代中药学大辞典》中记载：“冬虫夏草具有抗病原微生物作用，特别对葡萄球菌、链球菌、鼻疽杆菌、炭疽杆菌、猪出血性败血症杆菌等有抑制作用。冬虫夏草煎剂对絮状表皮癣菌、须疮癣菌、石膏样小芽胞癣菌、羊毛状小芽胞癣菌等真菌有抑制作用。”而其中对结核杆菌的作用各家报道却有不同的说法，但多数报道都认为冬虫夏草醇浸剂对于结核杆菌有一定抑制作用，抑菌浓度为1:4000-1:100000之间，而煎剂浓度在1:100-1:10000之间无抑菌作用。蛹虫草菌的代谢产物“冬虫夏草菌素”在浓度为0.1mg/ml时对鸟型结核杆菌有抑制作用；而浓度为1mg/ml时枯草杆菌亦有抑制作用。对感染鼻疽杆菌的兔，经静注虫草素（虫草酸）治疗后，可使给药组兔生存时间比对照组延长53h。而通过试管实验得知，体外试验其酒精浸出液1:4000-1:100000浓度时对结核杆菌H37RV有明显抑菌作用，加入血清后则抑菌作用减弱，需1:500才能抑制结核菌的生长，水煎剂对人型、牛型结核杆菌及耻垢杆菌均无抑制作用。对肺炎球菌及某些致病性真菌经初步试验有一定抑制作用。
　另外，在《医用中药药理学》一书中对冬虫夏草的抗菌抗癌作用也有相关的记载：“冬虫夏草制剂在试管内能抑制链球菌、鼻疽杆菌、炭疽杆菌、猪出血性败血症杆菌及葡萄状球菌的生长。冬虫夏草对HeLa细胞有显著抑制的作用，能使生命曲线、分裂指数、软琼脂生长能力、集落生成率的对比率相对比较低。同时，对淋巴瘤和Lewis肺癌的原发灶和自发性肺转移也都有显著抑制作用。连续注射从冬虫夏草提纯出来的拟青素，能增强ESC的NK细胞活性，在一定的范围内，拟青素浓度依赖性的抑制3H-TdR、3H-UR、3H-Leu掺入到EAC细胞DNA、RNA 和蛋白质分子中，这说明拟青素干扰EAC细胞核酸合成代谢。”我们可以采用程序外DNA合成（UDS）检测法来检测癌诱变剂MMS与蛹虫草同时作用脾淋巴细胞时，UDS反应性明显低于MMS单独使用时UDS反应性，这表示蛹虫草具有拮抗MMS所致BALB/C脾淋巴细胞DNA损伤的作用。此外，冬虫夏草还可以抑制喉癌细胞的生长曲线和克隆形成。虫草多糖能抑制S180肿瘤生长，增加外周血淋巴细胞酸性非特异酯酶阳性（ANAE+）细胞百分数，增强迟发性变态反应（DTH）及巨噬细胞吞噬活性。冬虫夏草可以诱导肾小管细胞cmc原癌基因mRNA持续高表达，增强转换生长因子基因表达，促进肾小管细胞生长，调节细胞凋亡。
　而虫草的水提物或醚提物可以明显抑制肉瘤，肺癌、乳腺癌等肿瘤的生长，增强一硫基嘌吟的抗癌作用。并且口服或腹腔给药均有效。虫草醇提物对前胃鳞状上皮增生无治疗作用，但是可以减少其癌变的发生率，抑制Lewis肺癌克隆的形成。冬虫夏草及人工虫草菌丝醇水提物对皮下植移性Lewis肺癌的原发灶生长和自发肺部转移均有明显的抑制作用，不但可以抑制S180肿瘤生长，而且还可以增加环磷酰胺的抗癌作用。
　总的来说，通过各方面的、有关联的、有权威性的资料里显示，针对于补虚益气或治疗肺癌、肾癌、肝癌、乳腺癌、食道癌、喉癌、子宫癌、前列腺癌等各种癌症、肿瘤，冬虫夏草的确是一副上佳良药。不管是治标还是治本，它都能在某中程度上起到一定的治疗作用。

三、提高细胞能量、抗疲劳
